In the first Test played between India and South Africa, R Ashwin bowled best and took the maximum 8 wickets, in which he took 5 wickets in an innings. After watching Ashwin's torrential bowling, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh feels that Ashwin will break his record of 417 wickets soon and he has the ability to take more than 600 wickets in Test cricket.
In an interview to India Today, Harbhajan Singh said, "People say that Ashwin bowls much better under domestic conditions, but will have to believe that other spinners also bowl on the same pitch at the same time and Ashwin is the best of them."
Ashwin also completed his 350 wickets during the first Test and became the fastest 350 wicket taker for India. Ashwin completed this feat in 66 matches, whereas earlier this record was in the name of Anil Kumble, who took 77 matches to take 350 wickets.
Harbhajan said, 'I don't know about taking 600 wickets, but they are very close to 417 wickets. Looking at the way he is performing, it seems that he will complete 400 wickets soon and can take 500 wickets. Talk of taking 600 wickets, his journey is still long. If they have to do this, they have to be fit. If Ashwin stays fit, he has the ability to achieve any position.
Bhajji said with this, 'Ashwin is doing very well with the ball. When we talk about domestic conditions, it proves to be very effective and we have to give credit to them. Why do they take more wickets under domestic conditions? Because he is quite consistent. They have a lot of variation and know how to use it at the right time. He has become an example for other captains on how to bowl on the turning pitch.
