Ever since Modi said, "Ab ki baar Trump sarkar (this time will be the Trump government)", the Congress accused the Prime Minister of violating the country's foreign policy by interfering into other nation's domestic politics.
Defending Modi, Jaishankar who is presently in the US, said the Prime Minister had said what was used by Trump in the past.
Taking a dig at Modi, Rahul tweeted, "Thank you Mr Jaishankar for covering up our PM’s incompetence. His fawning endorsement caused serious problems with the Democrats for India. I hope it gets ironed out with your intervention. While you’re at it, do teach him a little bit about diplomacy."
Before the 2014 General Elections in India, "Ab ki baar Modi Sarkar" was the slogan which was raised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Donald Trump during his campaign in last election had used the slogan to appeal to Indian American voters.
Slamming the Prime Minister, Congress leader Anand Sharma had earlier tweeted, "Mr Prime Minister, you have violated the time honoured principle of Indian foreign policy of not interfering in the domestic elections of another country. This is a singular disservice to the long-term strategic interests of India."
"Our relationship with the United States of America have throughout been bipartisan, vis-à-vis Republicans and Democrats. Your actively campaigning for Trump is a breach of both India and America as sovereign nations and democracies."
Trump, the Republican leader, will seek a second term in 2020 when the US will head to the next Presidential election. In 2016, Trump succeeded Barack Obama by defeating Democratic leader Hillary Clinton.
