Anurag Kashyap had read the novel in 2006 when it came out and in 2014, was approached by AMC from Scott Free Productions for a series in English. Kashyap declined the offer as he did not want to do "anything based in India, in English".
While Anurag Kashyap directed the Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) angle of the story, Vikramaditya Motwane looked upon Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan).
The storyline is highly based on real time events in Mumbai and India between 1980-1993. The character of Gaitonde is loosely based on real life gangster Arun Gawli, where as the character of Sulemani Isa is based on Dawood Ibrahim. The Rags to Riches Story of Gaitonde , Fleeing to Dubai and 1993 Bomb Blasts by Isa et all are based on the real characters.

Sacred Games was shot on different real locations as it was set in a period, which Motwane expressed was a "huge logistical challenge". While parts of the novel were set in 2004, the series was changed to modern day.
Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte) saves contact numbers of the persons with some random names based on what they do or what position they are or what sect they belong. For instance she had saved the name of tech guy who was tracking Ganesh Gaitonde's & Dattak Singh's call as "Breaking News", that of Sartaj Singh as "Milkha" and that of her senior or boss as "Boss DK" (a cuss word).
Season one covers the first quarter of the original novel.
The titles of all the episodes have their meaning in Hindu Mythology. A parallel is drawn between the theme of an episode and the mythical story related to the title.

Nearly every episode has a direct reference to the Hindu epic Ramayana, either in the form of the popular 1980s comic adaptation (episode one) poster of Hanuman and Rama and Sita (episode 2 and 3) the 1988 tv series Ramyan (episodes 4) performances (episode 6) or in the series dialogue, for example as Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin sSddiqui) in episode 7 threatens the Muslim population of Mumbai with the fires of retribution, he refers to Hanuman's revenge at the hands of King Ravana In then Ramayana on the City of Lanka.
This is the first time Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap have worked together on the same project.
