This week will be historic. In over 150 countries, people are stepping up to support young climate strikers and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. The climate crisis won’t wait, so neither will we. 

Young people have woken up much of the world with their powerful Fridays For Future school strikes for the climate. Now, millions of adults are joining in a huge wave of that will kickstart renewed action all over the world. The urgency of the climate crisis requires a new approach and a just response centered on human rights, equity, and justice.

'No Planet B': Hundreds of thousands join global climate strike

Hundreds of thousands of protesters, many of them school students, have gathered in towns and cities across the Asia Pacific region, kicking off a day of worldwide protests calling for action against climate change ahead of a United Nations summit.

From the Pacific Islands to New Zealand, Australia and Thailand, protesters took to the streets on Friday, demanding their governments take urgent steps to tackle the climate crisis and prevent an environmental catastrophe.

Organisers estimated 300,000 people turned up for the "global climate strike" in Australia, the world's largest exporter of coal and liquid natural gas.

Protests were staged in 110 towns and cities across the country, with crowds calling on the government to commit to a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swede who inspired the climate strike, tweeted her support.

"Incredible pictures," she wrote from New York. "This is the huge crowd building up in Sydney. Australia is setting the standard!"

The Global Climate Strike has begun, and not a moment too soon because the planet is in a bad way. The Arctic has been burning and fires still rage in the Amazon rainforest. Iceland recently held a funeral for a 700-year-old glacier that was lost to the increasing heat. One million species are threatened with extinction and some have already been lost. Birds are dying in the billions across North America. We are living in an emergency -- and the kids are absolutely not alright. This September, students and adults are joining together in global strikes to demand action on climate change.
