VVS Laxman First got his Chance to Debut for India in 1996 against South Africa. He has played a middle order batsman on those days but due to the availability of Sachin, Dravid, Azharuddin he was facing problem to settle his stand on the team so the members of cricket management decided to give him the opportunity as a opener but he failed. Only one performance which was reminded by everyone is the innings of 167 runs played outside India.

In 1998 he got a chance to play in ODI but he totally failed and then again he was called in 2001 for the test series and he was going to play in the middle order.
In this series, he played a memorable innings of 281 runs that was very impressive. On that day India was given a follow on and VVS laxman came to bat at Number 3. After that inning, Laxman became an important part of the team. But on the other hand the ODI performance was not going well for him, he hit 4 ODI centuries where 3 centuries are from 1 series only.
