There are over millions of lakes which covers almost 4% of the Earth's land surface. Some of them are known for their astonishing beauty and fascinating ecosystem and some are as old as the earth. Here are some of the most interesting lakes from around the world. From breath-taking beauty to the mysterious disappearing lake.
1. Kaindy Lake:
Kaindy lake is located south-east of the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan. This lake stretches about 400 m long and 30 m in depth. An earthquake gave birth to this lake in 1911, which triggered a landslide. This formed a natural dam and over time, the trees began to submerge under subsequent years of rainfall.
Trees usually rots away when they are underwater. But, due to extreme cold temperature of the lake, the spruce trees are well preserved. Even throughout the warmest of season, the water rarely exceeds six degrees. The amazing colour and unusual appearances of this lake is mainly caused by limestone deposits and algae at its depth. The lake remains frozen throughout winter.
2. Lost Lake, USA:
The lost lake located in Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon, USA, has earned its unique name because of its disappearing act during summer. The 0.34 sq km and 9 ft. deep lake vanishes and turns into a meadow, leaving no traces of water periodically. Researchers have discovered that the secret behind this mysterious disappearing act is due to two lava tubes. The lake is filled with water when the amount of rainwater exceeds the draining capability of the lava tubes and continues to fill throughout winter.credit: third party image reference
But, during the dry season, the lake loses its water source and drains down through the hollow lava tube and disappears.
3. Lac de Gafsa:credit: third party image reference
It is located 25 km from the town of Gafsa in Tunisia. Lac de Gafsa also known as 'mysterious lake' appeared in the Tunisian desert out of nowhere. The lake is estimated to be 18m deep and stretches about 1 hectare. Hundreds of people have been swimming since ignoring that the water could be contaminated with chemicals and possibly radioactive. Geologists have suggested that, the cause may be due to seismic activity that may have ruptured rocks above the water table, sending ground water to rise to the surface. In the first few days, the water was clear and after couple of days the water changed from turquoise blue to murky green, infested with algae.

The blue lake, located to the south of the city of Nalchik, Russia is one of the five lakes that allegedly appeared by the deposition of limestone thousands of years ago, which gives its distinctly blue colour. Situated at 809 m above sea level, the deep blue colour of this lake looks stunning and are surrounded by mystery. This lake is uninhabited by any living organisms and avoided by the locals. What's fascinating is that, the temperature of the water constantly remains at 9.3 degree Celsius throughout the year. It is also considered as one of the deepest lake with a staggering depth of 846 ft. Some divers who dare to dive in this lake haven't been able to explore it yet, due to its astonishing depth.
