On 24 Dec 2019, the union cabinet has approved the proposal to update of National Population Register(NPR). It is to be noted that NPR has already been present in India working under the citizenship Act, 1955, and Citizenship Rules, 2003, this proposal has only been passed to update it. The National Population Register exercise will be held from April 2020 to September 2020 across India except in the state of Assam.
Union Cabinet has also passed the budget for a Census of Rs 8,754 crores and for updating National Population Register(NPR) Rs 3,941 crores.
It is the Register of usual residents of the country, which includes both citizens and non-citizens and mandatory for all. It is usually prepared at the local(village/ sub-town), sub-district, district, State and National level. The last NPR was conducted in 2010 and 2011, the difference is that now it is being digitized and some general questions have been added.
The aim of NPR is to create a comprehensive identity database of every usual resident of India. In this process, general information are taken from citizens, on the basis of which problems of the people and their needs near them is taken care of. Thus this data is very important for planning and decision making for the betterment of citizens and identifying the root cause of problems along with their possible solutions. Government schemes regulations are examined improving transparency for the government to look at ground level development, which strengthens the security of the country.
NPR - National Population Register, NRC - National Register of Citizens.
NPR - NPR includes anyone who is residing in a particular place in Indian territory for 6 months or plans to live for the coming months, this includes foreigners(Citizens and non-Citizens).
NRC - NRC requires to prove our citizenship by revealing some documents in your support, this is only for citizens.
