Kangana Ranaut is an Indian actress and director who works in Hindi films. The recipient of several awards, including three National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards, she has featured five times in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list.
Kangana Ranaut was born on 23 March 1987 at Bhambla, Himachal Pradesh, India. The real name of Kangana is, ‘Kangana Amardeep Ranaut’. And her nickname is Arshad. Kangana’s mother Asha is a teacher of Sanskrit and her father is a businessman.
Kangna has a younger sister, Rangoli, who was attacked with acid in 2005. Rangoli lives with Kangana in Mumbai and has now fully recovered. Kangana was forced to leave the family home in Himachal Pradesh as her father wasn’t happy with her decision of becoming an actress. She did not even receive any financial assistance from her family members throughout the years of her struggle.
Kangana arrived in Delhi at age 16 and started modelling for France-based Elite Modelling Agency. She won her first Best Actress National Award for ‘Queen’ in 2015 and the second for ‘Tanu Weds Manu 2’ in 2016. The other two actresses who won back-to-back National Award Best Actress are Shabana Azmi and Archana.

She did her schooling from DAV High School, Dehradun where she participated in many debated and elocutions. She is also a skilled basket ball player. Before Kanagana decided to make a glamorous career in the Bollywood, she had dreams to pursue a career in Medical field.

Kanagan Ranaut is one of the youngest actresses to win prestigious National Film Awards at the age of 22. Apart from this Kangana Ranaut has also won four Filmfare Awards: Best Female Debut – Gangster(2006), Best Supporting Actress – Fashion (2008), Best Actress – Queen (2014), and Critic’s award for Best Actress – Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015).

She is a trained Kathak dance and took training under Rajendra Chaturvedi for four years in Nateshwar Nritya Kala Mandir. She also enrolled herself in the Elite School of Modelling. Kangana started out as a theatre actor in Delhi with the Asmita Theatre Group. She worked with director Arvind Gaur at Indian Habitat Centre. Her first play was Girish Karnad’s Taledanda (Rakt Kalyan).

She believes that she is a very difficult and stubborn person. She also doesn’t have many friends as she considers herself very boring. Her passion spans food, fashion, fitness and films. She is a vegetarian who loves to cook in her free time. She was listed as “India’s hottest vegetarian” by PETA in 2013.

According to Kangana, her father slapped her for the first time because at the age of 15 she wanted to quit her studies and pursue the art of sculpting. Anurag Basu spotted Kangana having coffee at a café in September 2005. She hasn’t looked back ever since he signed her for a lead role in Gangster (2006).

Kangna has a younger sister named Rangoli, who was a victim of an acid attack in 2005 by a jilted man. Rangoli was immediately flown down to Mumbai with her parents for treatment and later got married to her fiance Vikram.

Kangana doesn't want to limit her creative instincts to acting only. She's also written a period film an assignment for her course and tried her hand at directing a nine-minute short film. She also intends to direct a full-fledged feature film in future.

Not many people know that Kangana has written and delivered the dialogues of Queen as per her style. Kangana, in an interview, has accepted it by saying, ‘I told Vikas Bahl the director of the film that I would like to do the character in my own way.

Kangna has worked in 27 films so far, out of which one was in Telugu (Ek Niranjan, 2009) and another in Tamil (Dhaam Dhoom, 2008). When asked if she would do another Telugu film, she said she would if it was opposite star actor Mahesh Babu.

Ranaut is a practicing Hindu and a follower of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. As part of her faith, the actress shuns meat, something that in 2013, earned her the title of “India’s Hottest Vegetarian” from animal rights organization, PETA. Also named on the list that year was fellow Bollywood star, Vidyut Jamwal.
