Several years ago the data storage was done in many ways such as in a palm-leaf manuscript, stone carvings e.t.c. After that data was stored in the paper in written form or in diagrammatic form. After that came many electronic storage devices such as magnetic tapes, pendrives, CD's, harddisks e.t.c has came.
DNA Data Storage:
Now scientists came across new means of data storage. According to this, the data is not going to be stored in electronic devices the data is going to be stored in the biological matter. Where the data is going to be stored in DNA.
2018 Data Storage Report:
According to the software company Domo, Every minute in 2018 people watched 4.33 million videos on youtube, Google conducted 3.88 million searches, posted 49,000 photos and tweeted 473,000 times on Instagram, sent 159,362,760 e-mails.
2020 Data Storage Estimation:
An estimation that by 2020 1.7 megabytes of data will be created per second per person globally which is equal to 418 Zettabytes in a single year. So, it seems like we will have a data storage problem in the future where the generation of the data is increasing day by day.
It seems that optical or magnetic storage will not last more than a century. If we think about data centers the consumption of energy will be more. So, the scientist thought about the alternative and came across the idea of DNA data storage.
Data Storage In DNA:
At first, It seems the data which we need to store in the DNA should be translated from a code of 0s and 1s to As, Ts, Cs, and Gs. The genetic code is then synthesized into an actual molecule and the encoding process is complete. For Retrieving the data two steps should occur. The two steps are (i) processing (ii) decoding. Where it seems the retrieving process seems to be a little bit complex.
