As the weather warms up, the atmosphere begins to smell of mangoes. Like all other fruits of the season, they lose their significance in front of this fruit emperor. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served with everything from raw mango sauce and pickles to cooked mangoes.
Mango was discovered 4,000 years ago today. A poem by Amir Khosrow shows that the Iranians used to call this fruit "Naghzak". Mango is second to none in color, aroma and taste.
In ancient India, there was a special process involved in different periods of life (from birth to death), that is, mango was used on every important occasion. People's wisdom and interesting imagination made this fruit "common".
Samples of fruit resembling mangoes have been discovered from Harappa and Moinjo Daro. In addition, the travelogues of Ibn Batuta and Ibn Hankal also mention mango trees and fruits. It is said that some one and a half thousand years ago a Chinese traveler took Huan San Mango to a world outside of ancient India. The emperor and his courtiers spend a considerable portion on this fruit. The whole court was proficient in the political language of fruits.
According to historians, one lakh mango trees were planted in Darbhanga and East India during Akbar's reign. It is said that Jahangir and Shah Jahan were very fond of Indian mangoes. Jahangir's statement is well known in this regard. "Despite the sweetness of the fruits of Kabul, none of them, in my opinion, is equal to the taste of mango." Wherever mangoes were highly desirable, it is said that once in the Deccan, the king accused the crown prince of eating mangoes from his favorite tree and reaped the entire harvest this season.
The most succulent mangoes are found in the Indian subcontinent. Mangoes are found in abundance all over the Indian subcontinent. No other fruit is bought more than mangoes in its season. Pakistan also cultivates excellent mangoes which are exported all over the world.
