That's how these veggies got there names!!


We often used to see peoples buying various vegetables in the market.They call it from there names but how they get these names.The word"Vegetables" is also derived from Medieval Latin"vegetabilis"-growing of a plant.The word vegetables was not established until 18th century.In 1767, the word was used to mean "plant cultivated for food, an edible herb or root".In year 1955, first slang word used is"veggies" for Vegetables.Similar to it,other vegetables also got there names from different methods/ways.Some of the vegetables that eaten by us also have common names:-
credit: third party image reference1.Potato( solanum tuberosum)-The word"potato"comes from batata, the Taino,a Carribbean language,word for sweet potato.Initially Spanish called it patata and after some years it converts into potato.

credit: third party image reference3.Tomato(solanum lycopersicum):-Tomato is not a vegetable,it comes in category of fruits.The species originated from South America and North America.The Nahuatl(language used by Aztecs),word'tomati' gave Spanish word"tomate" from which the word"Tomato" derived. credit: third party image reference4.Lemon(citrus lemon):-The word lemon comes out from the old French word'Limon',which is used for Arabic roots and served as generic term for citrus."limonin"that found in citrus fruits gave the term lemon,like lemon, watermelon etc. credit: third party image reference5.Brinjal(solanum melongena):-The other local name of eggplant is"brinjal".The name of eggplant was given by Europeans in 18th century.It happens as the variety they knew had fruits that were of same size and shape of eggs. credit: third party image reference6.Sunflower(Helianthus):-The name comes from Greek laters"helios"-Sun and "anthsos"-flower.Sunflower got this name as the plant turns towards the sun.Reseachers found that sunflower turn toward sun so as they mature early.Some kinds of sunflower are grown for food and oil. credit: third party image reference
