I don't think it's been seventeen years since the film 'Andaz' was released. seems like yesterday. The film was made with two debutant actresses which became superhit. Akshay Kumar used to work with me like an in house actor in those days. Earlier, we had worked together in films like 'Beast', 'Ek Rishta' and 'Talaash - The Hunt Begins'.
The story of 'Andaz' was written keeping Akshay in mind. Earlier in this film, I wanted to cast another established actress alongside Karisma Kapoor, but for some reason she did not get along. Then I decided to cast two new actresses. I had no plans to cast Priyanka Chopra in the film before. Priyanka had already earned fame by becoming Miss World. One day she came to my office with her secretary. Seeing them, I thought this girl is beautiful, but her beauty was completely different from actresses like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Juhi Chawla who worked with me.
When I looked closely at his style of talking and operating his eyes, I remembered Rekha. At the same time, I signed him up for this role. I signed Lara Dutta just a day before that. Part of the film was shot in Cape Town, South Africa. At the same time, we shot the film's hit song Rabba Ishq Na Howe.
A sequence of this song was to be shot in the middle of the waves on the seashore. Lara Dutta was afraid of water, but she risked going to sea for the shoot. We took all precautions while shooting, but there is no confidence of waves. In the middle of the shooting, there was a huge wave. Lara's balance in it deteriorated and she drifted away with the waves. Before we thought everything, Akshay Kumar saved him by playing on his life.
I wanted to make a good romantic film. Wanted to give a social message with him. Because of this, the film included social problems like widow marriage. Its end was also planned happily. After this film, I was shooting for the film 'Barsaat' with Akshay and Priyanka, some scenes of the film were also shot. For some reason, Akshay had to leave the film in between. I then signed Bobby Deol. The film 'Barsaat' was completed in just two months.
