My Detailed Review Of The Movie
A con-artist exorcist has a documentary crew follow him around to document how he made a career out of manipulating religious subjects. As far as found footage horror movies go, I was surprised to say that the first act of this film had me hooked. The concept was an interesting self-aware approach to genre cliches, & established an engaging, believable protagonist. After only a handful of scenes, I completely bought into Patrick Fabian’s character, which is a huge compliment for any actor to say the least.
Truthfully, I adored the start this movie had. Unfortunately, instead of providing clever commentary on the genre cliches, it only fell into a void of mirror reflecting them. The setup was very predictable, but that’s not what bothered me. It just didn’t do anything with it. There are distinct plot points that should prove to be internally challenging to the main character, but are played like any given character would react. The pacing was inconsistent, & the ending really lost me both in terms of story & in tension. A few scenes did manage to build some sort of tension, but most of the “scares” were easily anticipated. The biggest sin to me, which felt almost like a betrayal to the aesthetic found footage horror movies can provide, was the introduction of a score.
While it was not used excessively, the fact that it was used at all just goes to show that someone behind the production, whether it be the director or the studio, was more focused on audience reception than integrity to the craft. I really didn’t dislike this movie, even if it might sound that way. It had enough to make it stand out to me as memorable. I’m more just disappointed on the uncapitalized potential it had.
My rating for this movie is 2.5/5
