Johnny Lever was born on 14th of August 1957 in Andhra Pradesh. His real name is John Rao Janumala. He is first child of his parents. He has two younger brothers and two sisters. His parents are Karunama and Prakash Roa. His brother Jimmy is a stand up comedian and singer. He belongs to a Christian family. His father was an operater in Hindustan Lever Company, from which he got the title as lever. He likes watching old films, doing mimicry and travelling. He went to the Andhra Education Soviety School and studied only up to 7th standard due to poor financial conditions. He started selling pens, books and other products to help his father. He learnt new style of comedy in a small town of Hyderabad. He also started doing job at his father's office for few years. Later, he started doing mimcries and standup comedy in many cultral functions. He was a member of Kalyanji Anandji group. The popular veteran actor Sunil Dutt saw his performance and offered a role in his film.

Johnny made his debut in bollywood by playing the role of Uttam in movie Love 86 in 1986. He became so popular for the supportive and comic role in the movie Baazighar in 1993 for which, he was also nominated for filmfare award. He acted in the role of police inspecter, servant, lead actor's friend or women in many of his films. Some of his popular films are Joru Ka Ghulam, Hamara Dil Aapke Pass Hain, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Koi Mil Gaya, Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiya etc. He acted in tulu movie Rang in 2011. He appeared in ads of Kachva Chhap. He also acted in some tv serials like Johnny Aala Re, Zabaan Sambal Ke and Partners Trouble Ho Gayi Double.

He was judge of reality show Comedy Circus in 2007. He won many awards for his comic role. He married to Sujata in 1984. He has a son and daughter named Jesse and Jamy. His daughter is also a comedian and singer.
