Mumbai, October 5: Priyanka Chaturvedi, Shiv Sena leader, was detained by Mumbai Police on Saturday following protests in Aarey Forest in the city. According to a video shared by ANI, Chaturvedi was seen having a heated argument with the cops at Aarey Colony. The incident comes hours after Police imposed section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Aarey Colony and surrounding areas on Saturday. Section 144 prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area. According to the law, every member of such 'unlawful assembly' can be booked for engaging in rioting.
Chaturvedi was detained by Mumbai Police after strong protests by activists against the felling of trees in the green zone for a Metro car shed, an official said. Officials informed that the cops have booked 38 protesters under various sections of the IPC since late Friday night. After the MMRCL started cutting trees on Friday, hundreds of activists held protests and tried to stop the action. .

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) started cutting trees late Friday night to make way for the car shed. On Friday, the Bombay High Court dismissed four pleas filed by NGOs and activists challenging the decision to allow felling of trees in the prime green lung of the city. .

According to a report by PTI, hundreds of people gathered at Aarey Colony to protest against the proposed car shed after they were informed that trees were being axed by authorities late Friday night. Plice started dispersing the crowd and had to forcibly remove the protesters. Officials informed that when the situation worsened, police started taking protesters into custody.
