Situated on the eastern coast of Central Tamilnadu. Thanjavur district has its headquarters in Thanjavur town. This ancient city enjoys the distinction of having been the capital of Cholas.
Modern Thanjavur is a fertile plain which is often refereed to as the 'Rice bowl' of Tamilnadu. The Cholas were great Temple builders. It has 74 temples famous temple is Thanjavur (Brihadeeshwarar) Temple.
Thanjavur(Brihadeeshwarar) Temple:

This Temple built by Rajaraja Chola is the greatest landmark is also known as the big temple it is an outstanding example of superb architecture and craftsmanship. The imposing Vimana. Is the most striking feature. It rises perpendicularly to the height of 15 metre from a square base of 29 metre and tapers off to a total height of 65.4 m. The structure is made from granite block weighing about 80 tonnes.

It is said that this massive stone was moved into position on a Six kilometres long inclined 'plain'. A gigantic Nandi (bull), the mythical moment of Lord Shiva guards the portals of the shrine. It is second largest monolithic sculpture in the country. In the inner courtyard of the Temple are some superb frescoes reminiscent of the cave paintings of Ajanta.

The place:
Near the Temple is the place built partly by the Nayaks sometime around 1550 and partly by the Marathas. The buildings have corridors and spacious halls. The Armoury and observation towers are visible.

The place houses an interesting art gallery which contains some granite, and bronze statues.

Library:
The Saraswathi Mahal library in the place dates back to about 1700 and has over 30000 palm leaves, and paper manuscripts in Indian and European languages.
