Social Media: New rule will come on social media in three months, See once

The central government said in the Supreme Court on Monday that the Internet has emerged as a powerful weapon to cause unimaginable damage to the democratic polity. The Center said this while seeking three more months to finalize new rules governing the functioning of social media institutions.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology told the apex court that technology has led to economic growth and social development, but hate speeches, fake news and anti-national activities have also increased a lot. There seems to be a need for a change in the rules for effective control of companies providing Internet facilities, keeping in mind the growing danger to the rights of the people and the integrity, sovereignty and security of the nation.
A bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Suryakant took the affidavit on record. Earlier, counsel Rajat Nair on behalf of the Center referred to the case and said that he sought three more months to finalize the Information Technology Intermediary Guidelines (Amendment) Rules, 2018.
