The great artist Charlie Chaplin who entertained people around the world for years through silent movies without speaking, died in 1977 on this day. 'Sir' Charles Spencer Chaplin is considered a comic stalwart of silent films.

Chaplin breathed his last at the age of 88 at his residence in Switzerland. In 1975, Charlie Chaplin was awarded the title of Knighthood. Charlie Chaplin leaves behind wife Oona O'Neill and eight children. Oona was the daughter of the famous playwright Eugene O'Neill of his time. It is said that Charlie Chaplin went into a coma while sleeping.

Two days after his death he was buried about a mile away from his home in Lausanne, Switzerland. His body was stolen from the grave which was recovered back in May 1978 after disappearing for nearly 11 weeks.
