How much do you love mango? Enough to spend US $3,744 (or 122,840 baht) for some? Known as “The Egg of the Sun” or taiyo no tamago in Japanese, this variety of mango grown in Japan’s Miyako prefecture is the world’s pricest mango.
The lavish price tag is partially due to the mango’s incomparable candy-like sweetness, with a reported hint of pineapple and coconut. Japanese farmers have been able to produce this rare and coveted flavour of fruit through extensive oversight of its growing conditions. For example, the crop is surrounded by a small net that allows sunlight to hit the skin in a uniform manner to give it its perfectly round shape and ruby red colour, which of course adds to its high value. There is also protective cushion on the ground for when fruits fall from the tree to prevent mishapening from happening.
Price aside, The Egg of the Sun is also considered a very luxurious fruit because of what it represents. Japanese culture takes the act of gifting to whole other level by making the act more important than the gift itself. It is such a sign of respect and honour to gift people rare fruits that sometimes recipients will show respect back by not eating the gift and instead putting them on display. So maybe the question is would you eat or display the world’s most expensive mango?
