Birth of India's external intelligence agency: R&AW
Research & Analysis Wing ( R&AW) came into existence on 21 September 1968 due to certain circumstances of that time
Before R&AW, intelligence Bureau (IB) was looking into intelligence for India in both internal as well as external matters. But during Indo-china war 1962 IB failed to show its effect as a result of which India lost a part now called Aksai chin.

Similar mistake repeated when IB one again failed to predict about chance of war with Pakistan in 1965
In my view, assassination of Lal Bahadur Shastri ( if it was), then it would also be called a intelligence failure of IB.

After death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi became prime minister and she thought the idea of intelligence agency which particular deal with matter outside India and put this idea in front of cabinet. This agency was named as R&AW.

Ramnath Kau who was at deputy post in IB was first chief of the agency and Mossad (Israeli intelligence agency) trained the agents. In few years R&AW became one of leading intelligence agency of World but when Morarji Desai came to power, it is said that the first decision he took is about cutting the budget of R&AW by 30%. His blunder of revealing the secret of mission related to Kahuta affected secret service badly. Still agents of R&AW are working day and night in different part of world secretly to safeguard the country.
