Why Are We Obsessed With Celebrities?

Who are celebrities? Some individuals who are 'celebrated' by the majority of the people in a country or in the world. Basically, it means being famous. For example, a celebrity in India, can't go to the local store to purchase maggi without getting mobbed.

We get awed by their persona, but we also forget that celebrities are normal human beings like us. They are made of the same blood and flesh like you and me. So what makes famous people the super human beings that we think they are? Where to they get their powers from?
The answer is simple. It is you and me. The source of their super human powers? The attention that the masses shower on them.
In India, you could expect to be famous like crazy, if you are pursuing a career in films, preferably the Hindi film industry, if you are sweating day and night, honing your skills as a cricketer or if you aspire to be a politician. In this age of the internet, many you tubers and Tik tokers have also earned the stardom of being a celebrity in India. But this is not about the celebrities. This is about the people who help other people 'become' celebrities.

It is one thing to appreciate someone's work and move on. While it is completely different to get obsessed with that someone. We love to follow our favorite film stars' every move. From what they have in their breakfast to what they wear to their beds, we love to know everything. And I must say, the story is not one sided. Celebrities, being humans as they are, love and cherish attention. They intend to gain it and amplify it by constantly updating their fans about themselves. We fall for the bait and immerse ourselves in their virtual world.
Now, in India, celebrity hood has little to do with skills and talent. To be famous, you need not be the best actor or the best singer in the world. You just need to have or at least pretend to have with the help of your paid team, what millions of Indians dream of. Namely, a dream house, a hot body, perfect face and hair, perfect bank balance. Basically, a perfect life.

For someone, who aspires to be famous that way, attention and social media following is essential. They would rather work hard to create a better virtual version of themselves than work on their skills in the field of their job. We get lured by what we see and follow them 24*7. But the question is, what do we get in return?
I know people who try every thing they can to get one reply from their favorite celebrities. They make collages, music videos, comment on their every photo, every post. They do these things relentlessly every single day, multiple times. Sometimes, if they are lucky, or if the actor is relatively a little less famous, they do get that most coveted response and feel on top of the world. And if they are not so lucky, or if the actor has followers in millions, their chances of getting acknowledged by their idols is as good as the world getting free of terrorism one day. But nevertheless, fans don't give up and keep commenting and sharing and stalking their dream people.
When I see such madness, I can't help but wonder what would happen if someone showed the same level of determination for their goals and dreams. What would happen if we pursued our dreams with the same craziness as we pursue stars?

One day, you might get a reply from your favorite actor, but what would you do with that reply? No one would give you a job or any importance because of your 'feat'. Your bank balance will not increase either. They, on the other hand, would keep getting the millions of likes and shares and dollars as they always do. But you would be where you have always been.
All I am saying is, it is okay to be in awe of other people's work, just because they are so good at it. But it is definitely not okay to be in love with them to the extent that we forget we have a life of our own. It is even worse to obsess over people who are famous because they are famous. And it is absolutely moronic to waste our time fantasizing about them.

Here is a tip. Our eyes are almost blinded by the glitter of what we see. But try to calm yourself down and look for what you cannot see. This could be the struggle they did before they became rich and famous. This could also be the enormous efforts they put to appear 'flawless' and having that 'perfect' body and face.
Also, take a moment to realize what would happen if, instead of spending your time on some one who is already so successful, you spent your time on yourself.
Their life is set. They have it all. And to tell the bitter truth, your favorite celebrity is not aware of your existence too. You are one of the millions of the collective herd which is labelled as 'fans'. So it is for you to decide.
Whether you want to be the 'fan' who does not have a life or a fan who just appreciates their movies and moves on to focus on his or her own life.
