5 Epic Battles in World History


Battles are generally termed as warfare between two armed forces in a confined area. We all must have seen and heard about many battles in Indian history, but, there are some epic battles in world history also.
1) Battle of Plassey
Plassey is situated on the banks of Hooghly river, near Murshidabad. The battle was fought between East India Company and Nawab of Bengal and his French allies in 1757.It was fought to establish control over India. Before this The British East India Company, The French and Independent Indian rulers were all trying to regain control over India. After this battle British East India Company changed from a trading company to a governing power to conquer whole India.

2) Battle of Edessa
The Battle of Edessa was fought between Emperor Valerian of Roman empire and Shahanshah Shapur I of Sasanian forces in 260 AD. The place Edessa where it was fought is now known as Urfa located in southeast Turkey. The roman forces were defeated by Sasanids due to which there were series of revolts in roman empire leading to division of roman empire in fragments.

3) Battle of Cajamarca
The Battle of Cajamarca was fought between Inca ruler Atahualpa and Spanish army led by Francisco Pizzaro. Cajamarca also spelled as Cajamalca is situated in Peru. The battle is referred to as "Massacre" by historians as Incas were ambushed and looted from all their riches and treasures. It was fought in the year 1532.

4) Battle of Khotyn
Fought in 1673, between Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth forces led by John Sobieski and Ottoman forces under Hussain Pasha. Also known as Battle of Chocim or Hotin War. Khotyn where the battle was fought is present day Ukraine. The Ottomans were defeated and they withdrew from Poland.

5) Battle of Wizna
Fought during initial stages of invasion of Poland between Poland and Germany in the year 1939. 350 Polish soldiers defended a fortified line of territory against 40000 Germans. Because of this Wizna is sometimes referred to as a "Polish Thermopylae".Wizna is located in Poland. The war was won by Germany.
