India is known for its interesting history in which many such wars have taken place, whose stories and glories are sung even today. But there have also been many wars, the reason for which was very strange. Today we are going to tell you about a such strange war where thousands of soldiers lost their lives due to a watermelon. This is an incident which took place 375 years ago, which is known as 'Matire Ki Raad'. Watermelon is called matira in some parts of Rajasthan and raad means quarrel. This battle is the only battle in the world which was fought because of only one fruit.
The battle called 'Matire ki Raad' was fought in 1644 AD. This story is such that at that time the village of Silva of Bikaner state and Jakhani village of Nagaur princely state were adjacent to each other. These two villages were the last frontier of both the princely states. It happened that a plant of watermelon grew in the border of Bikaner state, but one of its fruits went to the border of Nagaur state. Now the people of the princely state of Bikaner believed that if the watermelon plant is in their range then the fruit also happened to them, but the people of Nagaur princely state that when the fruit has come to their limits then it happened to them. There was a quarrel between the two princely states about this matter and gradually this quarrel turned into a bloody battle.
It is said that in this strange battle, Bikaner's army was led by Ramchandra Mukhiya, while Nagaur's army was led by Singhvi Sukhmal. However, the kings of both princely states did not know anything about it at that time, because King Karan Singh, the ruler of Bikaner, was on an expedition at that time while Rao Amar Singh, the ruler of Nagaur was in the service of the Mughal Empire. Indeed, both the kings accepted the subjugation of the Mughal Empire. When the two kings came to know about this war, they demanded the Mughal court to intervene in it. However, it was too late by then. War broke out before the matter reached the Mughal court. Although the Nagaur princely state was defeated in this war, it is said that thousands of soldiers were killed from both sides.
