Films which Americans shot at surprising Indian locations

 

Bollywood filmmakers run around the world looking for a beautiful location to shoot their films. Does that mean India’s very own scenic beauty leaves filmmakers unimpressed? While watching a Hollywood movie, we do not expect to see our country in the background. But nothing beats the thrill of spotting India in a Hollywood film. There have been many instances when a Hollywood film was partially or wholly shot in India.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (Varanasi) - The film told the story of Benjamin Button’s case of reverse-aging, whereby he shrinks in size as he grows older. Some of the scenes from the film were shot in Varanasi.

The Dark Knight Rises (Mehrangarh Fort) - Christopher Nolan’s action-thriller was shot in India. While the prison in which Bruce Wayne is held captive was built in the UK, the escape scene was shot at Mehrangarh Fort.

Zero Dark Thirty (Chandigarh) - Although the film is about hunting down Osama in Abbottabad in Pakistan, the crew did not get permission for shooting there. So Kathryn Bigelow got her crew to Chandigarh and the shooting locations in Chandigarh were the Punjab Engineering College premises and the DAV College canteen.

Mission Impossible 4 (Bora Bazaar and Sun TV office in Bengaluru) - Mission Impossible-4 was shot in India. The explosive climax was shot in the by-lanes of Bora Bazaar, Mumbai. Besides that, a couple of scenes were shot in the Sun TV office, Bengaluru.

Octopussy (Udaipur) - The 1983 James Bond film had a couple of scenes shot in India. Roger Moore, playing Bond, was shown infiltrating a palace which is located in Udaipur.

A Mighty Heart (Pune and Mumbai) - Have you ever read about The Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and killed by Al Qaida? His widow, Mariane Pearl wrote a book about it which was adapted into a film, with Angelina Jolie playing her. Although the depicted location in the film is Karachi, Pakistan, once again the crew did not get permission and had to make a satisfaction with Pune and Mumbai.

Eat, Pray, Love (Delhi, Haryana) - In the film, the protagonist goes to Italy, India, and Indonesia to eat, pray and love, as the name of the film and Julia Roberts, who played the lead, is shown searching for spirituality in India. The scene was shot at the Ashram Hari Mandir in Pataudi, Haryana.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Jaipur and Udaipur) - The film is about British retirees who come to India for a vacation. They stay at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel starring Judie Dench, Maggie Smith, and Dev Patel. Most scenes of the film were shot in Jaipur and Udaipur.
