It’s just as hard to gain weight fast as it is to lose weight fast. So your best bet is not just to gain weight, but to gain muscle weight.

Go to a gym and Lift heavy weights.

If you have never lifted weights you are in for a treat. You will find that about a month in that you can lift much more than when you started. Partially this will be because you’ve gotten stronger, but mostly because there is a mind body connection. The more you can concentrate, the more weight you can lift.

If you can, lift slow. 3–4 seconds up or down as the case may be, then 3–4 seconds up or down as the case may be. Doing it slow will mean that you lift less weight. Persist. Keep at it.

Keep track of your weight and of your inches. That is, measure your body parts - waist, calves, quads, hips, chest, shoulders, arms, etc - and keep measuring them.

You may find that you lose absolutely no weight whatsover on the scales, but that your pants get looser, your shirts get tighter. You are putting on muscle. Muscle looks better, works better, feels better.

I had a friend who was 5 ft 6 and weighed 144 pounds. She started lifting weights, and she got really, really strong. She was doing the Olympic weights and at first she struggled just to do them with the 45 pound bar. But she wanted to become a veterinarian and knew she needed more upper body and core strength to be able to pull calves out. After a years time she was still 5 foot 6 and weighed 144 pounds. She hadn’t gained or loss an ounce on the scale. But she looked completely different. I think she lost something like 5 dress sizes. And she had no problem pulling calves out, which impressed her professors at the vet school.

If you are female don’t worry about putting on gobs of muscle. It is not going to happen, because you don’t secrete enough testosterone.

If you are female or male and you have the build of an ectomorph, that is you are naturally skinny, you can get much, much stronger and get bigger muscles. But you won’t build them as easily or as fast as say a mesomorph, someone who is naturally muscular.

One tip. Always work on your legs and butt and back. That is where your true strength is located. And after a hard workout, treat yourself to something with protein and is a bit sugary - like a protein drink or chocolate milk. Only do this kind of eating after a hard workout.
