Underrated actor actress in Bollywood

We all know how Bollywood works, so the less said the better. But having said that, you just cannot fail to notice few faces that leave a lasting impression on your mind due to their amazing good looks and terrific on-screen presence.

Its a shame, that talented actors are quite often ignored and useless star kids are venerated for no meaningful contribution to the Indian cinema.

The below mentioned actors are much much better than the superstars of Bollywood. In fact, these people are the ones that make Bollywood worth watching.

Actor -Male

Kay Kay Menon - Kay Kay Menon needs no introduction. He is a man of few words and blows everyone’s mind with his brilliant performance. A follower of ‘method acting’, he will surprise you with his terrific acting skills.

Ashutosh Rana - Forget horror movies and watch Ashutosh Rana’s performance in Sangharsh, you will surely get nightmares. Most of the 90’s kid from India, will surely remember his power-packed performances in Dushman and Raaz. Quite sad to know that a product of National School of Drama was never appreciated for his performances.

Atul Kulkarni - I don’t understand, how can someone be so good-looking and still be content with playing character roles? Atul Kulkarni is one such guy who is sexy, talented and very well-spoken. Seriously underrated!

Harsh Chhaya - If there is any actor in Bollywood, who has a great voice, it has to be Harsh Chhaya. This guy quintessentially plays character roles, but his brilliant performance overpowers the presence of the main lead, in every single scene which he is a part of. Watch him in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate and you will agree with me completely.

Adil Hussain - I have seen his performances in Life of Pi, English Vinglish and Jai Ho Democracy. And I just cannot take my eyes off from him.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub - No one could have played the role of Murari, better than this guy in Raanjhanaa. In fact, I believe, Dhanush was more confident about his performance in this movie, because he had the company of this guy in most of the scenes.

Actor - Female

Ratna Pathak Shah - She needs no introduction. A theatre veteran, we all love her as ‘Maya Sarabhai’. Mrs.Shah is one of the few from the industry, who is well-spoken, sophisticated and secure within herself. Its an absolute pleasure to watch her on-screen. [Please see her recent interview, given against the backdrop of the recent controversy related to her movie “Lipstick under my burkha”.]

Tisca Chopra - Brilliant performances in Taare Zameen Par, Ankur Arora Murder Case and Rahsya. Though her on-screen presence is limited, she takes the cake, the baker and the bakery too in the department of Powerhouse Performance.

Simone Singh - I was a kid when her TV Serial tiled ‘Heena’ was aired on Sony Entertainment Television. And I would watch the show whenever I visited my relatives (since I have never had TV at my home). After that, her fans were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her in K3G and KHNH (Thank you KJo), after which she seemed to have disappeared completely. Wish she did more Bollywood films.

Nimrat Kaur - Have only seen The Lunchbox and Airlift and I fell in love with this lady. She is graceful, entertaining and beautiful.

Taapsee Pannu - I fall short of words, every time the name of this lady is mentioned. Pink, Baby and The Ghazi Attack were the three films that I saw (am yet to watch Naam Shabana), and I was clueless as to why isn’t she a big star in Bollywood, yet. Would I be wrong, if I call her ‘Lady Akshay Kumar?’ [Feminists, please take it with a pinch of salt!]

Mahi Gill - I have seen her performance in Sahib, Biwi aur Gangster and must admit, that she has a great on-screen presence. If given a chance, she can be much more than just a ‘glam doll’.

Note:

  1. I haven’t mentioned about Jimmy Shergill, Randeep Hooda, Vidyut Jamwal, Radhika Apte, Richa Chadda, Divya Dutta and Swara Bhaskar etc…because they have been already mentioned in other answers.
  2. The mentioning of these actors isn’t done with the purpose to make the answer look different. I have seen their movies and can vouch for their amazing on-screen presence, which is unfortunately not present in any of the star kids.
  3. When I say I don’t respect most of the celebrity kids, its my personal opinion and not something to be debated about. Ask any serious cine buff, and they would second my opinion. Unfortunately, Bollywood is blinded by looks, inflicted with nepotism and lusts Oscars, despite making useless movies backed by huge production houses.
  4. Doing commercial movies isn’t wrong (after all everyone needs money to run the show), but doing ridiculous movie in the name of entertainment is a serious crime. And when looks start to overpower talent, movies end up being a glam show and actors look mere puppet.
  5. Huge respect to the underrated actors, who have survived and thrived in Bollywood (despite the partiality) and have proved their mettle, time and again.
