Sarah Wayne Callies is an American actress who was born on June 1, 1977, in La Grange, Illinois. She grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she attended Punahou School. She later attended Dartmouth College, where she majored in English literature and graduated in 1999.

Callies began her acting career with guest roles on television shows such as "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Dragnet." Her breakout role came in 2005 when she was cast as Sara Tancredi on the hit Fox series "Prison Break." She played the role for four seasons, earning critical acclaim for her performance.

After "Prison Break," Callies starred in several other television series, including "The Walking Dead," "Colony," and "Council of Dads." She has also appeared in films such as "Whisper" and "Black November."

In addition to her acting career, Callies is also a writer and director. She wrote the script for the 2014 film "Black November" and directed an episode of "Colony" in 2018.

Callies is married to Josh Winterhalt, with whom she has two children.

Callies' parents are Valerie Wayne and David E. Callies, who is a law professor at the University of Hawaii. Her mother is of Ashkenazi Jewish and German descent, while her father is of English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry.

Callies has always been interested in performing arts and was involved in theater productions during her school years. She also learned to speak Spanish, French, and Mandarin Chinese during her high school and college years.

After graduating from Dartmouth College, Callies moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. She studied at the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver, Colorado, and also took classes at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

In addition to her acting and directing work, Callies is involved in various charitable organizations. She has supported causes such as human trafficking, cancer research, and disaster relief efforts.

Callies has received several award nominations for her acting work, including a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress on Television for her role in "The Walking Dead" in 2011. She was also honored with the Women's Image Network Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in "Prison Break" in 2006.
