Irene Cara is an American singer, songwriter, and actress, born on March 18, 1959, in The Bronx, New York City. She began her career as a child actress, appearing in off-Broadway productions such as "The Me Nobody Knows" and "Via Galactica."
Cara rose to fame in the early 1980s with her performances in the films "Fame" (1980) and "Flashdance" (1983). She starred as Coco Hernandez in "Fame," a role that earned her critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. She also sang the film's title song, which became a hit single and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
In "Flashdance," Cara contributed vocals to the hit song "Flashdance...What a Feeling," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and topped the charts in multiple countries. She also appeared in the music video for the song, which became an iconic representation of 1980s pop culture.
