About 18 years ago on 11th September 2001 terrorists hijacked four planes and targeted prominent places in the United States. Two of the planes crashed at World Trade Centre, 1 at Pentagon and another plane crashed in a field at Shanksville in western Pennsylvania.
Here are five rare facts about the World Trade Centre that you may find interesting:
Not the first attack on World Trade Centre - The attack on 11th September was not the first attack on World Trade Centre. Previously another attack was attempted on the World Trade Centre in 1993. The attack killed six people and injured many others. It created a large hole and also instantly cut off the main electric power line and knocked out the emergency lighting system.
Meeting got postponed - The company that owned the World Trade Centre had scheduled a meeting on 11th September in the 88th floor of tower 1. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss what should be done in case of a terrorist attack on the building. The meeting was however cancelled, because a person was not present in the meeting.
Judy Melinek - She is a medical examiner who identified numerous victims of the attack on World Trade Centre. Many of these were only scraps of flesh, pieces of bones or limbs. She was called in August 2002 as a foot bone was found on top of another skyscraper about 1/5 mile away.
Officer killed off-duty - Officers John Perry of the New York Police Department had gone to the headquarters for retirement paper work. When he heard the explosion he immediately responded. However, he was killed as one of the towers collapsed. He was the only off- duty police officer to be killed in the incident.
Presence of a Wooden Ship - Workers at the site found the remains of a 32 foot long boat. It is estimated to be 200 years old and was possibly made in the 18th century. It is believed that it was dumped there with wooden beams and trash in about 1810 to make up the land.
