Beginner Tips for using Blender for 3D Modeling

Learning any new software can be a daunting task. But learning a new design paradigm WHILE learning a new software application can seem like the Mt. Everest of undertakings

At least that’s what I thought when I decided to give 3D modeling a whirl. The software I chose as my Sherpa is the highly recommended (and FREE) shareware application Blender. And while the trip was full of starts, stops and side trips, I did find it a fun and rewarding journey. Here are few tips I learned along the way.

Watch the Tutorials

Despite being an open source, free software, the amount of online training materials is quite impressive. Start with the 43 Part Blenders Fundamentals Series, which covers everything from high-level interface navigation through detail how-tos for every tool in the suite.

If your time or interests are limited, you can pick and choose your way through the subject areas that are the most relevant for you now, and go back later to learn additional topics. Don’t forget to finish with the quick and entertaining tutorial where you turn a simple cube into a cute owl – great fun and great practice for your new skills.

Set up a challenge

The best way to reinforce what you are learning is to set up small challenges as you learn new skills. Start simple, like creating simple geometric objects using new materials and textures, and grow into creating your own 3D rigged character. The goal is to challenge yourself to learn incrementally while not getting overwhelmed in the process. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day – so you shouldn’t expect to be able to model it in one either!

While you are working your way through ever more challenging goals, make use of the extensive reference guides, which cover in detail every aspect of the tools, and their uses. A handy search tool can help you navigate to just what you need – or tackle the materials section by section to uncover new techniques and hidden tools.

Learn the shortcuts

Use this handy shortcut guide to learn the fastest way to achieve your desired results. Print it out to have handy as you go through the tutorials and reference guides.

Start small and expand

As you grow in your comfort with the tool, branch out to different aspects of 3D modeling. Move from object modeling to complex sculpting and painting. Move from simple animation rigging to video motion and tracking. While the subject matter may seem overwhelming at first, the more you learn the more you will feel comfortable in branching into different areas.
