credit: third party image reference13 November is the day of Dhanteras. It is celebrated on the first day of Diwali. We will be buying new clothes, jewelries and many more on this day.But why actually we celebrate Dhanteras? There are many interesting mythological stories behind Dhanteras. The most popular one is of King Hima's.
Once upon a time, there was a king named Hima.During the birth of his son, the astrologers predicted that the son would die due to snake bite on his sixteenth birthday.King Hima was devastated. He searched for ways to save his son's life.He consulted a renowned astrologer and as per the astrologer's advice, king Hima got his son married to a girl who had a lucky horoscope. The couple lived happily for a few years. The girl was very clever. On the eve of her husband's 16th birthday, she came up with a plan to save his life from Lord Yama(God of death). She piled up all her jewels in front of the main door and  asked her husband to not sleep, she too stayed awake throughout the night.
At night in the appointed hour of taking the boy's life, lord Yama came to his house in the form of a snake. When the snake was about to enter the front door, the jewels stopped it on the way.The jewels were so gleaming  that the snake couldn't see anything clearly. In addition to it ,the girl was singing sweet songs to keep Yama distracted. The songs were so enchanting that the snake(Yama) stayed at the doorstep and forgot its purpose. The time to take the boy's life was over and lord Yama gave up his mission.
Thus, this legend gave rise to the concept of Dhanteras celebrated every year on the same day of Krishna Paksha Trayodashi in the month of Kartika, just before the Diwali festival.
It's been said that Dhanteras is the surest way of inviting prosperity into the household.
