Billie Burke (1884-1970) was an American actress who appeared in numerous stage productions and films throughout her career. She was best known for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz."

Born in Washington, D.C., Burke began her acting career in New York City in the early 1900s. She quickly became a popular stage actress, appearing in a number of plays on Broadway. Some of her notable stage productions included "The School for Scandal," "The Importance of Being Earnest," and "The Tiara."

In the 1920s, Burke began to transition to film. She appeared in several silent films before making the successful transition to sound. In addition to her role in "The Wizard of Oz," she also appeared in a number of other popular films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, including "Merrily We Live," "Topper," and "Father of the Bride."

Throughout her career, Burke was known for her distinctive high-pitched voice and her comedic timing. She was married to Broadway producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. from 1914 until his death in 1932. Burke continued to act in films and on stage until the 1960s. She died in Los Angeles, California in 1970 at the age of 85.
