Kitty Carlisle (born Catherine Conn; September 3, 1910 – April 17, 2007) was an American actress, singer, and TV personality, best known for her appearances on the game show "To Tell the Truth."
Carlisle was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a family of wealthy German Jews. She studied acting in Europe and made her Broadway debut in the 1930s. She appeared in several Broadway productions, including "Three Waltzes" (1937) and "On Your Toes" (1936), which included the song "There's a Small Hotel," which became one of her signature tunes.
In addition to her theater work, Carlisle appeared in several films, including "Murder at the Vanities" (1934), "She Loves Me Not" (1934), and "Here Is My Heart" (1934), which starred Bing Crosby. She continued to work in films throughout the 1940s, including "Radio City Revels" (1938) and "Larceny with Music" (1943).
Carlisle's career also included a stint as a TV personality, with her most famous role being a panelist on the game show "To Tell the Truth" from 1956 to 1978. She was known for her sophisticated style and charm, and became a beloved figure to audiences.
In addition to her entertainment career, Carlisle was a philanthropist and advocate for the arts. She served on the New York State Council on the Arts for many years, and was a board member of several cultural organizations, including the Metropolitan Opera and the American Theatre Wing.
Carlisle was married twice, first to playwright and producer Moss Hart, and later to actor and singer Wesley Addy. She had two children, Christopher and Cathy.
Kitty Carlisle passed away on April 17, 2007, at the age of 96. She was remembered for her elegance, talent, and contributions to the arts.
